The importance of the disease Spinal Stenosis :
According to American Association of Neurological surgeons it is estimated that about 400,000 Americans, most over the age of 60, may be suffering from the symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis. There are as many as 1.2 million Americans with back and leg pain related to any type of spinal stenosis.
Our Treatment:
Q: Can spinal stenosis be treated without surgery?
A: Yes. In fact, less than 5% of patients with a spinal disorder ever require spine surgery.
Our surgeon prefers non-surgical approach if possible or we call it conservative treatment. However if the surgery is the best solution, our team consults their best colleague to plan carefully for the patient. They will help to determine what procedure might be an appropriate treatment for the patient. Conservative treatments are:
- Medication to reduce pain (eg.NSAIDs)
- Physical therapy
- Supporting device /braces for patient’s lower back
- Epidural injections
Q: What happens if I’m one of the 5% that needs surgery?
A: Surgery (any kind of surgery) is a serious decision. Your doctor will take sufficient time to thoroughly explain your surgical options with you. You might consider bringing a family member or friend along for an added set of ‘ears.’
Here at Phyathai Nawamin International Hospital, our spine surgeons are completely committed to improve our patient’s health, their well-being and most of all, their quality of life.
